Dieses Talent veranlasst den Kupferstecher Bartholomäus Wolkenstein, den Jungen in seine Dienste zu nehmen. Doch woran arbeitet der Meister eigentlich in seiner geheimen Kammer und was enthalten die Briefe und Päckchen, die er von Boten aus allen Teilen Europas empfängt? Geht es dabei um die neuen astronomischen Theorien, wonach die Erde eine Kugel sei? Für die Kirche sind dies gotteslästerliche Gedanken - und tatsächlich setzen der Augsburger Domherr und der berüchtigte Inquisitor Heinrich Institoris alles daran, Meister Bartholo der Ketzerei zu überführen. Als wäre das alles nicht schlimm genug, soll Caspar ihnen auch noch dabei helfen - oder ihm droht der Scheiterhaufen! Und würde er einfach fliehen, dann würde er des Meisters schöne und rätselhafte Magd Klara nie wiedersehen.
