Der Autor, bekannt durch zahlreiche Kunstbuch-Veröffentlichungen, beschreibt in 5 Etappen Leben und Werk des Künstlers und kommentiert an wichtigen Bildern das künstlerische Schaffen. Manets Bilder stießen beim Publikum auf Verständnislosigkeit und führten zu Angriffen in der Presse. Es gab allerdings auch Künstler, die seine Bedeutung für die Malerei früh erkannten und ihn unterstützten, u.a. Mallarme, Zola, Baudelaire. Gut reproduzierte Werkbeispiele und Vergleichsabbildungen anderer Künstler illustrierten den Text. Im Anhang eine Zeittafel.
