Im Herbst 1918 tobt noch immer der 1. Weltkrieg, als die Spanische Grippe zu neuen Schrecknissen führt und bis zum Jahr 1920 Millionen Todesopfer in Europa und den USA fordert. Die 17-jährige Cleo schliesst sich als freiwillige Helferin dem Roten Kreuz in ihrer Heimatstadt Portland an und erlebt hautnah die verheerenden Auswirkungen der Seuche. Sie lernt neue Freunde kennen, erfährt Mitmenschlichkeit, aber auch Egoismus, verliert viele ihr wichtige Menschen an die Krankheit und ist angesichts der ständigen Todesdrohung um sie herum am Rande ihrer Kräfte. Doch sie hält durch und schöpft Kraft durch ihre erwachende Liebe zu einem Medizinstudenten, der sich ebenfalls als Freiwilliger engagiert. Das Erstlingswerk der jungen Autorin fesselt durch glaubhafte, authentische Charaktere, eine berührende Handlung, mitreissende Darstellung und eine in den Fakten wahre Geschichte.
