Summary, etc. Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse) ist die Bücherdiebin, ein außergewöhnliches und mutiges Mädchen. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs zerbricht ihre Familie und Liesel kommt zu den Pflegeeltern Hans (Geoffrey Rush) und Rosa Hubermann (Emily Watson). Durch die Unterstützung ihrer neuen Familie und durch Max (Ben Schnetzer), einen jüdischen Flüchtling, der von ihnen versteckt wird, erlernt sie das Lesen. Für Liesel und Max werden die Macht und die Magie der Wörter und ihre Phantasie zur einzigen Möglichkeit, den turbulenten Ereignissen, die um sie herum geschehen, zu entfliehen.
